The High Jump in Rome

This Romanian commemorative stamp celebrates the XVII Olympic Games held in Rome in 1960. Its design shows a high jumper rising above the bar in a moment of action. The simple blue artwork gives a strong impression of movement and athletic skill.

Strength Speed and Precision

High jump is an athletics event that requires a careful combination of speed strength and timing.  Every attempt demands concentration and balance. For collectors it is an attractive example of how sports were presented through mid twentieth century postal art.

Romania and the Olympic Spirit

The issue formed part of Romania stamps dedicated to the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome. The series included several sporting subjects and values. The 55 Bani stamp is recorded as the high jump design and is listed as Michel 1849 and Scott 1333. The Rome Games brought athletes from around the world together for international competition. They opened on 25 August 1960 and closed on 11 September 1960
