Scenic Lake Wanaka

New Zealand issued this 60 cent stamp on 27 March 1996 as part of its Scenic Definitives series. The design presents Lake Wanaka surrounded by mountains in the South Island. A border of kōwhai foliage frames the picture with golden leaves against the clear blue sky and water. The landscape reflects Central Otago natural beauty. Lake Wanaka lies on the eastern side of the Southern Alps and is known for deep blue waters and mountain surroundings. This issue was one of nine values released together to showcase notable New Zealand landscapes. The image gives the postal item the appearance of a miniature travel photograph.

Beauty of Central Otago

The scene focuses on the calm character of Wanaka rather than buildings or human activity. Trees line the shoreline while distant peaks rise behind the water. Their reflections add depth and balance to the composition. Golden vegetation around the edges suggests the autumn atmosphere associated with the region. The turquoise surface creates a vivid area that draws attention toward the lake. Central Otago is famous for dramatic scenery with mountains valleys rivers and open countryside. Wanaka attracts visitors who enjoy outdoor recreation including boating walking fishing and sightseeing. By placing this landscape on postage New Zealand Post presented an important destination to people at home and abroad. The artwork works as both a postal design and a celebration of the country environment.
