England Hosts the World Cup

Great Britain issued this stamp set on 1 June 1966 to celebrate the World Cup Football Championship held in England. The country hosted the eighth FIFA World Cup and the tournament became a moment in British sporting history. The Post Office prepared three commemorative values for the occasion. They were 4d, 6d and 1s 3d. Each design presents a different football scene showing movement, skill and competition. The 4d value features players with the ball. The 6d design shows a goalmouth melee while the 1s 3d stamp presents a goalkeeper making a save. These pictures gave the collection an appearance and introduced football as a subject in British postal history. The set was printed by Harrison & Sons using photogravure.

Three Designs of Football Action

The artwork captures different moments from a match rather than focusing on individual stars. This approach gives the issue a sporting character. Players challenge for possession while another scene concentrates on excitement around the goal. The goalkeeper design adds a dramatic element through a defensive save. Together the three values create a visual story about football during an era when the sport was becoming popular through television and international competition. David Gentleman designed the 4d stamp while William Kempster created the 6d value and David Caplan designed the 1s 3d issue. Their separate approaches give each piece its own identity while maintaining a clear connection with the tournament.

England Winners Commemorative Issue

England eventually won the final against West Germany at Wembley on 30 July 1966. Following that victory the Post Office produced a new 4d version using the original design with the words England Winners added. This separate stamp was released on 18 August 1966 and quickly became popular. Almost 12.5 million copies were produced and the supply sold rapidly. For collectors the June set and August victory issue are both important parts of British football philately. The stamps preserve a sporting chapter while also showing how postal designs can record national celebrations. These issues remain popular among collectors interested in football, history, commemorative postage and sport themed stamps.
