Sieraków Horse Heritage

This Polish commemorative issue celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Sieraków horse establishment. The complete series contains eight stamps released on 31 January 1980. Each value presents a different aspect of equestrian life connected with horses, training, work, transport or sport. Their designs have a strong traditional character and show animals. Rather than using portraits the series focuses on equestrian activities. This approach gives the collection a lively appearance while recording an important part of Polish horse culture.

Horses in Daily Life

The eight designs provide a varied picture of activities associated with the Sieraków establishment. One stamp shows four horses pulling a carriage. Another features a stable worker standing with a horse. Training carts appear on another value while a separate scene presents a fox hunt. A further design shows a horse drawn sleigh moving through a winter landscape. Working animals pulling equipment demonstrate the practical role of horses in rural life. One scene shows horses warming up. The final value presents a horse facing an obstacle which introduces the sporting side. Values range from 1 złoty to 6.90 złoty. Together these subjects create a record of horsemanship. These scenes also reflect changing roles horses held in Polish society.

A Polish Equestrian Celebration

Sieraków has a strong equestrian tradition. The 1980 postal series was created to mark 150 years of this heritage. All eight stamps share the same commemorative theme while offering individual scenes. The designs were issued in sheets of fifty with perforation measuring 11½ by 11¾. The first day covers were connected with Sieraków Wielkopolski. For collectors the country should be recorded as Poland and the confirmed issue date is 31 January 1980. A suitable title is “150th Anniversary of the Sieraków Horse Farm.” The series is attractive for thematic collections covering horses, carriage driving, hunting, winter transport and riding. Its illustrations preserve an image of Polish equestrian culture from an earlier period and make these stamps historical pieces for philatelists.
