Bhutan Himalayan Rhododendron

Bhutan released a beautiful rhododendron series on 15 February 1976. Two stamps in this group feature Rhododendron arboreum which is one of the best known tree rhododendrons found across the Himalayan region. The plant can grow into a large evergreen tree with a strong upright form. During flowering it produces clusters of attractive blossoms that create a striking display among mountain forests. This species is valued for its natural beauty as well as its importance within Himalayan plant life. Bhutan selected several rhododendron species for the 1976 issue to present the richness of its native flora. The artwork gives collectors a simple view of botanical subjects while connecting postage with the country remarkable mountain environment.

A Special Botanical Issue

The 1976 Bhutan rhododendron issue contains nine denominations. Rhododendron arboreum appears on the 4 Chetrum and 5 Chetrum values. Other stamps portray Rhododendron cinnabarinum, Rhododendron campanulatum, Rhododendron fortunei Rhododendron falconeri Rhododendron hodgsonii and Rhododendron keysii. All nine designs were released on the same date by Bhutan postal administration. The set was printed in multiple colours with botanical illustrations as its main subject. The use of different values made the group suitable for various postal requirements while also creating an attractive collecting series. The 4 Chetrum and 5 Chetrum examples are especially useful for collectors building a focused rhododendron theme because both carry the same species name while offering separate denominations.

Beauty of Himalayan Flora

Its flowers can appear in dense clusters above dark green foliage. A Bhutanese stamp featuring this species therefore carries both postal and botanical interest. For philatelists the issue is valuable as part of Bhutan nature themed material from the 1970. The floral subject makes it easy to identify and suitable for collections covering plants, flowers forests or Himalayan wildlife. The February 1976 release also shows how Bhutan used postage to highlight natural subjects from its environment. These small pieces preserve a record of regional diversity and remain appealing examples of Bhutanese thematic philately.
