Rare Pheasants of Pakistan

Pakistan released this wildlife set on 17 June 1979 as the fifth group in its Wildlife Series. The values were 20 Paisa 25 Paisa 40 Paisa and 1 Rupee. Each design focuses on a different bird. The Himalayan Monal appears on the lowest value followed by the White crested Kalij Pheasant the Koklass Pheasant and the Cheer Pheasant. The purpose was not simply decorative. Pakistan Post used these issues to draw attention toward wildlife protection and the importance of preserving native species. For collectors the group provides a useful record of Pakistan’s natural heritage in 1979.

Colorful Mountain Birds

The Himalayan Monal is a striking mountain bird recognized by its bright plumage and strong curved bill. These birds belong to the pheasant family and are connected with the northern regions of Pakistan. Their inclusion reflects the country’s varied terrain which ranges from forested slopes to high mountain habitats. The artwork gives each subject a clear profile.

A Conservation Themed Set

The denominations create a unified natural history theme. The set can be identified by its 17 June release date and its focus on pheasants. Catalogue records list the four values as 20p 25p 40p and 1r with the stamps appearing under Pakistan’s wildlife protection issues. The subjects are the Himalayan Monal Lophophorus impejanus Kalij Pheasant Lophura leucomelanos Koklass Pheasant Pucrasia macrolopha and Cheer Pheasant Catreus wallichii. These pieces remain examples of conservation themed postage. They combine bird study national scenery and postal history in a compact format making them valuable for collectors interested in fauna ornithology and Pakistani philately.
