Nile Crocodile in the Wild

This attractive issue shows a Nile Crocodile moving through a green natural environment. Its long body powerful tail and strong legs are clearly illustrated. The detailed artwork gives the reptile a natural appearance while the green background creates a feeling of a wetland habitat. The name Crocodylus niloticus appears prominently on the design. This species is an important part of Madagascar’s wildlife and can live around rivers lakes swamps and other freshwater environments.

A Remarkable Reptile

The Nile Crocodile is one of the largest living reptiles found in Madagascar. It has adapted to different aquatic habitats across the island. Its strong jaws powerful body and long tail make it an impressive predator. The word VOAY on the stamp is a Malagasy term connected with the crocodile. The French text below refers to animals that are disappearing and gives the design an important conservation message. The issue therefore combines natural history with awareness of threatened wildlife.

A Stamp for Wildlife Conservation

Released in 1987 this design formed part of a series dedicated to endangered animals of Madagascar. Other stamps from the same issue featured species such as the Madagascar Ibis the Lesser Vasa Parrot and the Nile Crocodile. The 60 FMG value also carries 12 Ariary on the design. This makes the stamp especially interesting for collectors of African wildlife and conservation themes. Its artwork preserves a small record of Madagascar’s natural heritage while reminding viewers of the importance of protecting rare animals.
