Polish Motor Vehicles

Poland issued this 1.50 zł stamp on 28 December 1973 as part of the Polish Motor Vehicles series. The design features the Polski Fiat 125p which became one of the best known passenger cars produced in Poland during the communist period. Red lettering at the upper left records distances of 25,000 kilometres 25,000 miles and 50,000 kilometres. These figures refer to international endurance records achieved by a specially prepared Fiat 125p during June 1973. The lower section carries POLSKA together with the 1.50 zł denomination. This issue combines transport history with a notable achievement in Polish motoring and national engineering pride.

A Record Breaking Automobile

The pictured Polski Fiat 125p represents more than an ordinary family vehicle. In June 1973 a specially prepared example completed a demanding long distance test near Wrocław. The car established world records over three distances. It covered 25,000 kilometres at an average speed of 138.08 km/h then completed 25,000 miles at 138.18 km/h. The final 50,000 kilometre result reached 138.27 km/h. The achievement attracted attention beyond Poland and became an important moment in the history of the national automobile industry. The stamp therefore serves as a small historical document celebrating engineering reliability endurance and driving skill.

Polish Automotive Milestone

The stamp forms part of a six value set titled Polish Motorization. Other designs in the group feature vehicles such as the Jelcz-Berliet coach the Jelcz 316 truck the Polski Fiat 126p the Nysa M-521 and the Star 660 truck. The 125p value is especially distinctive because its artwork directly refers to the three record distances. T. Konarski and J. Wysocki designed the series. The official postal document confirms that the six stamps entered circulation on 28 December 1973. The 1.50 zł value was printed in yellow blue green red and black with a circulation of 30 million copies. For a collection record the correct country is Poland and the issue date is 28 December 1973. Its subject links postal art with a major chapter in Polish motoring history.
