Kyiv Khreshchatyk – The Heart of the City

This attractive Soviet stamp presents a detailed view of Khreshchatyk in Kyiv. The carefully engraved design captures the architectural character of the Ukrainian capital during the late 1950s. Khreshchatyk was already an important part of Kyiv’s urban life and this postal issue preserves a view of the city from an earlier period. The pink and red tones give the artwork a classic appearance that makes it appealing to collectors interested in architecture and city views.

A View of the Ukrainian Capital

The stamp was issued when Kyiv was the capital of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic within the Soviet Union. The inscription УКРАИНСКАЯ ССР identifies the Ukrainian SSR while the central illustration focuses on the city itself. Khreshchatyk has long been one of Kyiv’s best known streets and remains closely connected with the identity of the capital. Through this design collectors can see how an important urban location was presented in Soviet-era philately. The detailed lines also highlight the buildings streetscape and planned character of the area.

A Historical City Series

This 40-kopek issue formed part of a larger 1958 series dedicated to the capitals of the Soviet republics. The series included views from different republics such as Minsk Tbilisi Vilnius and other major cities. The issue had a reported print run of 1.5 million copies. Today it offers collectors an interesting combination of Soviet postal history Ukrainian urban heritage and mid-century architectural illustration.
